There was a gap here and I turned the page quickly.
⦠Mrs W came up and blew the candle out and said I was straining my eyes. No wonder when I spend all day doing her stupid sewing! Now it was all yesterday that it happened. Anyway, when Miss Reid said about the uniforms and rules, Mr Walker, the warden, shouted ânow look here!â and some people at the back began to call out âfor shame,â and âgo back to your brothel!â I asked Johnny what they meant and he said, âYou donât want to know, Mags.â The arguing spread through the hall just like a fire eating up paper, and very quickly, everybody was shouting, at Miss Reid and each other. Miss Reid rushed off the stage and out through the back of the hall, and Johnny took my hand and pulled me round to where Miss Reid was still outside, talking to her friends. One, a posh blonde lady with a long face, said, âWhat are you two after?â as if weâd come to rob them. I felt I should be brave and I said, âWeâve come to tell Miss Reid how much we enjoyed her talk, and sorry about the other people.â Miss Reid stepped forward and shook our hands and said she was glad weâd come, and what did we think of pacifism. I said, âMy dadâs away fighting and I want him back safely, so the less war, the better for me.â But Johnny said, âI would fight. But not for a government. For my pals.â
She said, âBut if it werenât for the governments, there wouldnât be any fighting. Imagine that.â
We chatted a bit more and then she said, âYou seem interesting young people, would you like to come for tea next Tuesday?â I said we would if we could get away.
Johnny and I argued about pacifism all the way back, but then â I donât know if I should write this down. Spud, if you are ever reading this because I am dead, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER and stop SPYING on your sister because I will haunt you â (pause for Spud to stop reading and feel ashamed) â well, here goes â Johnny took my hand again. It was very dark, even with the torch, and he said, âMaggie, I like your gumption. Not many girls are willing to argue with a man, you know.â
I said âor a boy, like what you are,â and he laughed â and then he put his arm round me and kissed me. It didnât go on very long, and an owl hooted and made me jump and ruined it, but â he kissed me! I feel quite swoony, like a film star. Now I canât wait to get back to good old London, where Johnny can take me out and we can go for walks in the park and there isnât mud everywhere. I wonder if Johnny loves me?
